Our Pilot program began in October 2010 and runs through May of 2011. We currently have 12 student apprentices enrolled in the program working private caterings and Supper Clubs, as well attending four (4) weekly Lightfoot Academy classes. The Pilot program is meant to be a 'snap-shot' of the full program - demonstrating proof of concept, developing critical revenue streams and getting needed services to teens; the full program is meant to be implemented in two (2) and four (4) year cohorts. Currently our students are enrolled in:
Social Media - Taught by Rich Harris, Seagate Social Media Manager
Wellness - Taught by Village Yoga of Santa Cruz (Bikram)
Product Development - Taught by Serendipity Saucy Spreads
Sustainable Professional Development - Taught by Lightoot Founder, Carmen Kubas
Many of our classes use project-based learning to create links from theory to practice. You'll find student-led content on our FACEBOOK page and website, including student blogs, interviews, photo albums, etc. One project we did this past Fall included a catering event for the Santa Cruz Waldorf School and a Reciprocal Learning series we carried out with their 5th graders in their Biodynamic Garden. Over the course of two harvest days, our students harvested product for the catering event along side the 5th graders, procuring field greens, apples for a crisp and flowers for decorations. The event, a family style dinner for 200, served by our Lightfoot students, went amazingly! Have a look at the video on the Reciprocal Learning days, as see what we mean by 'whole-systems' learning.
